There was something unique about FC Zenit’s 2-0 triumph over SL Benfica in Lisbon on matchday one – it was the only away win in the opening 16 UEFA Champions League fixtures.
With ten house victories and five draws, this was the lowest amount of away wins recorded on the very first matchday because the resumption of the one group stage format in the 2003/04 campaign. The previous record low arrived in 2007/08 when there were only two away achievements on matchday one, for Valencia CF and Manchester United FC.
